WEATHER: A look at the weekend cold front - showers

Summer like conditions are expected today with high temperatures moving into the mid to upper 80's this afternoon.

Dry high pressure will keep the shower chances at bay today, but Saturday increasing moisture ahead of a southward diving cold front, will bring shower and thunderstorm chances for the overnight hours.

As the cold front moves through on Sunday we will start Mother's Day with scattered showers and thunderstorms.  This moves off shore during a breezy Sunday afternoon with temperatures taking a nosedive into the early work week.

Friday – Awesome – Sunny Hi: 86F
Saturday – Early, clouds build. Afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms. Hi: 81F
Sunday – Early showers and thunderstorms. Afternoon, breezy. Hi: 80F

'Swatting' is a dangerous trend, says Pender law officials

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT)- A possible double murder call came to the Pender County 911 center in March. It was an intoxicated man, saying he had just shot his wife and would kill his son if the cops didn't come in the next 5 minutes-- but it was all a prank.

Several units arrived to the area of the call including the Pender County Sheriff's Office NC State Highway Patrol, Pender EMS, and Surf City Fire Department. However, no one could seem to find the address the caller stated. The general area was sealed off and law enforcement spoke with several neighbors of the caller -- they all attested that the said address didn't exist.

WEATHER: Perfect late spring weather

As nice as it was yesterday it will be slightly nicer this afternoon as, for the first time this month, we will move temperatures to above normal for this time of year.

Expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures just above 80F near Wilmington – to the mid 80's for inland locations.

Highs will move into the mid to upper 80s on Friday with mostly sunny skies ahead of a cold front poised to move through on Sunday that will bring showers to our Mother's Day forecast.

SPECIAL REPORT: Ticketing towns

(Source: MGN Online/USMC)

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (FOX WILMINGTON) – You may know the feeling – the one where your heart sinks when the blue lights go on in your rearview mirror. Just about everyone who's spent time behind the wheel of a car has been pulled over by the cops.

We crunched the numbers and found out where you are most likely to get a ticket in the area. As you'll learn, in the world of driving, all towns are not created equal.

The Town of Burgaw only has about 3,800 residents, but officers there wrote more than 1,400 traffic tickets in 2012.

Based on population, it's one of the most likely places in the area to get a ticket.

"I see them out and about and stopping people, and writing tickets and all of that," said driver Diane Lee. "I think it's over the top."

Burgaw Police Sgt. Jason Godwin, however, disagrees with Lee. He says, "the more citations your write, the more people slow down and the more lives you save."

New principals appointed to Ashley, Hoggard high schools

Norvell is currently an assistant principal at New Hanover High School, and has previously been an assistant principal at Pine Valley Elementary School, and Pender County's Cape Fear Middle School. He also served as an intervention specialist at Noble Middle School and an instrumental music teacher at both Roland-Grise Middle School and Topsail Middle School.

Norvell graduated from UNCW with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of School Administration degree.

Pender Co. sees increase in sales tax revenue

Pender Co. sees increase in sales tax revenue

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The county manager in Pender County says the area has seen an increase in sales tax revenue this year.

The manager believes the increase is a result of more and more people visiting the beach towns and spending money there.

He said construction is also up on the eastern side of the county.
