WILLARD, NC (WECT) – On over 80 acres in northern Pender County, Johnson Nursery Corporation produces thousands of plants each year, and they end up being sold to over 400 east coast retail nurseries and garden shops.
And while familiar hollies and junipers are still a big seller, owner David Johnson's decision to diversify into plants with more color is a big reason he is still in business while many of his competitors aren't.
"Annuals, perennials, mix planters is what turned the corner for us," said Johnson.
Plants like these, over 7,500 Knockout Roses, that will be ready for sale in the spring, are filling up this new field.
And Friday was a big day for Johnson Nursery, as the Company was honored as North Carolina's Small Business of the Year.
"This is a hard working group of people here, and for us to be recognized as the winner of this statewide honor speaks great volumes about what our employees do and what we have been able to accomplish," said Johnson.
Johnson says customer service is another key component to his company's success. He tells an interesting story about people working together and first told to him by his father, which has remained a major part of his business plan ever since he first began growing plants thirty two years ago. It involves a turtle on a post.
"If you ever see a turtle on top of a fence post, you know he did not get there by himself, and that means that if you ever do anything remarkable, then you have a lot of people help you accomplish what you did," said Johnson.
Congratulations to Johnson Nursery Corporation, North Carolina's Small Business of the Year 2012.
