Moores Creek Battlefield to show 'The Patriot'

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Just in time for Memorial Day, Moores Creek National Battlefield will be showing the film The Patriot, according to a news release.

The movie stars Mel Gibson, and those who attend the showing are encouraged to bring favorite snacks, chairs and blankets as they enjoy watching on a large outdoor screen.

The event is free, and will start at 8 p.m., when the park’s historian will give a presentation about the events in the movie, discussing fact versus fiction.

Sign up now for Blueberry Festival Car & Truck Show

BURGAW, NC (WECT) – If you’re planning on entering the North Carolina Blueberry Festival Car & Truck Show, you’ll want to sign up soon.

The pre-registration deadline is June 7, according to the festival’s website. If you register prior to that date, the cost is $15 per entry.

If you register the day of the show, the cost is $20.

New park in Burgaw to open soon

BURGAW, NC - (WECT) - The Town of Burgaw will hold a ceremony to dedicate the new Rotary Park. The new park is located on Industrial Drive behind Pender Early College.

Funding for the park was approved by Town Commissioners in 2007. The Cape Fear Community College owned the land where the park is located, but agreed to donate the property for use as a public park.

The Rotary Club agreed to make donations to help pay for the parks amenities which include, seating areas, a covered pavilion with restrooms, swing sets and other play structures.

The dedication will be Wednesday, May 29 at 4pm.

YWCA Lower Cape Fear receives $15, 000 grant award for the fluid recovery program

News Release from YWCA:

(Wilmington, NC, May, 2013) - The YWCA Lower Cape Fear is pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation for the Fluid Recovery program, which was developed in partnership with the Pretty in Pink Foundation. The Fluid Recovery program is modeled after the YWCA USA’s Encoreplus program that was created over 30 years ago.

Pender siblings work to raise money for those in Boston

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Two kids in Pender County are taking a break from video games and dolls, and giving back. Dylan Minor, 7, and his sister Emma, 5, are raising money for people in Boston.
