PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Four high school seniors who attend schools in Pender County were nominated to compete in the school district’s process for the 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, according to the Pender County Schools website.
The students were chosen by their individual high schools, and were recognized at the Nov. 5 Board of Education meeting.
The program was established by former President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 to highlight the achievements of high school seniors.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction will proceed to recommend six students to the Commission on Presidential Scholars.
In January of 2013, students will be invited to apply for the honor.
Presidential Scholars will be chosen by the commission, and will earn a medallion and an expenses-paid-for trip to Washington, D.C. in June.
The following Pender County students were chosen by their schools:
Brodmerkel will represent Pender County Schools in the North Carolina program, Superintendent Dr. Terri Cobb said.
