PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Pender County teacher was recently chosen to compete in the Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice, according to the Pender County School System’s website.
Nakina Thomas, who teaches at Cape Fear Middle School, was one of 20 teachers selected out of 570 teachers countrywide to compete.
The award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of teachers in the country’s most challenging schools.
Of the applicant pool of 570 teachers, about 100 were chosen to submit teaching videos and reference letters, and 20 were then chosen for in-person classroom observations.
Thomas was chosen for the classroom observation, and went on to become one of nine finalists invited to New York to interview.
