Burgaw considers eliminating $300 fence permit

Burgaw considers eliminating $300 fence permit

BURGAW, NC - (WECT) - A public hearing will take place in the Town of Burgaw on Tuesday to consider changing the fence policy.

Currently, residents who wish to put fences in their front yards must apply for a Conditional Special Use Permit. The permit costs $300 and must be approved following a public hearing.

Now, leaders are considering changing the policy so residents no longer need to apply for the permit. Instead, they would put regulations in place to manage the types/heights of fences.

The current policy was put in place because there was some concern after chain link fences were put in historic areas.  The planning director says the proposed regulations would stop that from happening.

The public hearing on the fence policy change will take place on Tuesday, March 12 during the 4pm town meeting.

Pender County is home to 2012’s NC Small Business of the Year

WILLARD, NC (WECT) – On over 80 acres in northern Pender County, Johnson Nursery Corporation produces thousands of plants each year, and they end up being sold to over 400 east coast retail nurseries and garden shops.

And while familiar hollies and junipers are still a big seller, owner David Johnson's decision to diversify into plants with more color is a big reason he is still in business while many of his competitors aren't.

"Annuals, perennials, mix planters is what turned the corner for us," said Johnson.

Plants like these, over 7,500 Knockout Roses, that will be ready for sale in the spring, are filling up this new field.

And Friday was a big day for Johnson Nursery, as the Company was honored as North Carolina's Small Business of the Year.

Pender County Utilities to flush water lines

BURGAW, NC (WECT) - Pender County Utilities is making plans to introduce a new water supply to the Rocky Point/Topsail and Scotts Hill water distribution systems this Wednesday, now that the new surface water treatment plant is complete.

The process will start with a large scale flushing of the system to get rid of any sediment and particulate that has built up in the groundwater supply. Flushing is set to begin at Clarks Landing Road towards Rocky Point. It will move east on NC 210 to Highway 17 and then north and south on 17 to the borders.

The flushing program will take up to four weeks to finish. Customers could see low pressure or brown discoloration during the time. You should not wash clothes and minimize water use if the water appears brown. If you do see brown water, you are advised to run the cold water for up to five minutes to clear the lines.

Burgaw roundabout moves forward; grant accepted for more DWI checkpoints

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Plans for a new roundabout in Burgaw are moving forward. During Tuesday night's town board meeting, the board voted to accept the newest design for the infrastructure.

If everything goes according to plan, the roundabout will be built at the intersection of South Walker and East Wilmington Street.

The town board turned down the last design saying the turn was not wide enough for trucks that pass through. Town Manager, Chad McEwen says he was glad to see the latest version passed.
