PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man accused of killing his stepfather in Hampstead is a person of interest in another unsolved murder in Hampstead from 2009.
According to Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith, James Gorby of Hampstead was arrested Wednesday afternoon for shooting Roger Arnold Mock I, his stepfather. Preliminary autopsy results show Mock died of a gunshot wound to the chest and head.
Authorities say Mock was found dead inside a home on Electric Lane Wednesday morning. Smith said Gorby went to the home with the intent to steal Tuesday around lunch time.
Goby is accused of taking Mock's 12-gauge shotgun and shooting his stepfather in the chest. He is then accused of taking Mock's .22 caliber rifle and shooting Mock in the head.
According to Smith, Gorby was and still is a person of interest in the unsolved murder of Beverly Moore.
Moore, 52, was sexually assaulted, strangled and left for dead in the bathtub of her own home in broad daylight September 27, 2009, according to detectives. The incident took place on Sloop Point Road in Hampstead.
Detectives said Moore's husband found her body and went to a neighbor's house for help.
In 2009, authorities released the sketch of two people they were looking for to question in connection to Moore's death.
Gorby is expected in court October 17.
