Naturalization Ceremony to take place Memorial Day at Moores Creek Battlefield

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A naturalization ceremony will take place soon at Moores Creek National Battlefield, according to a news release from a Moores Creek spokesperson.

Candidates will become new citizens Monday as part of a partnership between the National Park Service and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Moores Creek Battlefield to show 'The Patriot'

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Just in time for Memorial Day, Moores Creek National Battlefield will be showing the film The Patriot, according to a news release.

The movie stars Mel Gibson, and those who attend the showing are encouraged to bring favorite snacks, chairs and blankets as they enjoy watching on a large outdoor screen.

The event is free, and will start at 8 p.m., when the park’s historian will give a presentation about the events in the movie, discussing fact versus fiction.

Board of Education to meet Monday

Board of Education to meet Monday

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender County Board of Education will meet Monday in a closed-session meeting to discuss confidential student information, according to a news release from a school system spokesperson.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at Central Office in Burgaw.

The pre-registration deadline is June 7, according to the festival’s website. If you register prior to that date, the cost is $15 per entry.

If you register the day of the show, the cost is $20.

YWCA Lower Cape Fear receives $15, 000 grant award for the fluid recovery program

(Wilmington, NC, May, 2013) -  The YWCA Lower Cape Fear is pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation for the Fluid Recovery program, which was developed in partnership with the Pretty in Pink Foundation. The Fluid Recovery program is modeled after the YWCA USA’s Encoreplus program that was created over 30 years ago.

Teacher, parent recognized at Board of Education meeting

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two Pender County women were recently recognized at a Board of Education meeting, according to the school system’s website.

Karen McGowen from Pender High School was recognized as the Outstanding Teacher for Gifted Education and Mary Tobin was recognized as Pender County's Outstanding Parent of the Gifted.

The women represented the school district a the state level in the North Carolina Association of the Gifted and Talented recognition program.

Pender Co. sees increase in sales tax revenue

Pender Co. sees increase in sales tax revenue

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The county manager in Pender County says the area has seen an increase in sales tax revenue this year.

The manager believes the increase is a result of more and more people visiting the beach towns and spending money there.

He said construction is also up on the eastern side of the county.
