Burgaw Middle School students compete in State Science Olympiad tournament

BURGAW, NC (WECT) – Burgaw Middle School’s Science Olympiad team recently competed in the State Science Olympiad tournament at NC State University’s campus, according to the Pender County School System’s website.

The team members qualified for the tournament based on their performance at the Wilmington regional tournament, which took place in March.

Of the event teams, three finished in the top 10 and earned medals.

Pender Early College students place in Region O competition

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender Early College High School’s R.O.C.A.M.E. recently compete at the Region O competition, hosted by Corning and CFCC.

Students competed in a variety of areas related to science, technology, engineering and math.

According to the school’s career development coordinator, the team took first place in Chemistry Clue, second place in the Quiz Bowl, and third place in the Math Test.

This was the first year students competed in the competition.

Burgaw Middle School comes in 5th place at science competition

BURGAW, NC (WECT) – Burgaw Middle School’s Science Olympiad team recently came in fifth place overall at the Regional Science Olympiad competition held at UNCW.

According to the Pender County Schools website, about 1,000 middle and high school students from 36 schools and five southeastern NC counties participated in the event.

The BMS team ranked among 23 schools and qualified for the state tournament in Raleigh in April.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Five Pender County students recently took home awards at the Regional Science Fair, which was held at UNCW.

Science teacher captures transit of Venus on paper plate

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The transit of Venus Tuesday night was the last one of any of earth's human inhabitants will see in their lifetimes. It won't happen again for more than 100 years.

A transit of Venus is when Venus crosses the disk of the sun from earth's perspective.

Dave Glenn, a sixth grade science teacher at Burgaw Middle School, captured part of the transit Tuesday night. He took the picture above of the Venus transit viewed on a paper plate around 6:45 p.m. near Castle Hayne. He submitted the picture to WECT via See it, Snap it, Send it.
