New tools help county prep for severe weather

This communication trailer has everything from radios, to televisions, to telephones

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Pender County will have several new tools this hurricane season to make sure its residents are ready for severe weather. All three tools were made possible because of grants.

One of the vehicles is a new communications trailer, equipped with radios, telephones, computers, and televisions. Tom Collins with Pender County Emergency Management says it can serve as a 911 call center if the current one is unable to function during an emergency.

The Emergency Management Department also has a new Companion Animal Mobile Equipment Trailer.

The trailer has everything from cages to kitty litter to dog food. Collins says during an emergency it can help take care of pets at a shelter that people don't want to leave home. He says many times people don't want to evacuate because they don't want to leave their animals at home.

Collins says there are enough cages to serve about 100 pets.

WEATHER: A memorable Memorial Day - Mostly Sunny

Dry, mostly sunny and slightly cooler than normal conditions will continue throughout this Memorial Day here in Southeastern North Carolina.

Heading to the beach?  No need for the umbrella as rain chances will be slim to none along the coast.  Highs on the area sand strands should push into the upper 70s as the persistent sea breeze keeps coastal conditions slightly cooler than their inland neighbors.

High temperatures should push up to around 80F in downtown Wilmington, 82F for the Columbus County Courthouse in Whiteville and 83F at White Lake.

Warmer conditions will be moving in as we move toward the middle of the week.  Look for daytime high temperatures in the upper 80s as we advance to the weekend with the afternoon shower chance every day.
